Stewards VISTA: The Nature Conservancy: Michigan

Michigan has 19 million acres of forestland, ranking 5th in the nation for total acres. These forests benefit us all due to the role they play in filtering air and water, harboring wildlife, providing recreational opportunities and boosting local economies through the creation of jobs and domestically-produced forest products. The Upper Peninsula holds 46% of Michigan’s forests—in fact, over 80% of the Upper Peninsula is forested. Many residents depend on the forestry economy, as well as the associated recreational economies provided by healthy forests. By bolstering a sustainable natural resource economy and related jobs in the Upper Peninsula, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) hopes to enhance an important part of Michigan's natural heritage and contribute to the overall health of the Great Lakes. This program will identify, develop and promote commercial-scale silviculture practices that measurably strengthen the health of working forests, while growing an important regional economy based on a sustainably produced wood supply, development of innovative new products made from forest bio-materials and forest-based recreational tourism. The VISTA member will have the opportunity to approach this project at three levels. First, providing residents with information on how environmentally sustainable silvicultural practices are better for the economy than traditional silvicultural practices. Second, establishing partnerships with dozens of public, private, tribal and industrial landowners to increase native tree diversity in Michigan’s forests and identifying private lands to enroll in TNC’s Working Woodlands program to expand a network of sustainably managed forests. And third, supporting the Michigan Forest Biomaterials Institute (MiFBI) to promote Michigan’s bio-economy in a variety of ways, including working with partners to attract a cross-laminated timber manufacturing facility to a rural area.

Member Duties : Identify and put in place mechanisms to increase the presence of a more diverse array of long-lived species (northern red oak, white pine) through selective underplanting and enhanced natural regeneration. Develop a program of research to address challenges related to recruitment and regeneration of native tree species in Lake State Forests and the status of current research to address those problems. Increase support (including funding) for the Michigan Forest Biomaterials Institute (MiFBI) and collaborate with MiFBI and other partners to develop new forest based products and develop strategies to commercialize those products. Provide research support in cross laminated timber (CLT) to MEDC and MDARD’s initiative to recruit a CLT manufacturer to Michigan. Develop suite of educational materials about TNC’s forest reserves and sustainably produced timber that can be adapted to different audiences including partners, landowners, students and the general public.
