Whittier Alliance - Tenant Organizer $875/mont rent stipend

Formed in 1977, the Whittier Alliance (WA) is a neighborhood-based organization working to engage and support neighbors and small businesses in our majority renter community of nearly 15,000 residents. Located a half-mile south of downtown Minneapolis, our community demographics are diverse; 41% identify as Black, Indigenous, or a person of color (including 17% Black/African American, 16% Latinx) and 59% are white. We are also one of the lower wealth neighborhoods in Minneapolis, with more than 50% of our households living below the poverty line, earning less than $35,000 annually. Many immigrant-owned businesses line our major corridors. WA engages with and promotes the well being of community through free events, project-based organizing, and connection to other resources. The VISTA Tenant Organizer will assist WA with building capacity -- structurally, culturally, and in relationships -- to deliver on emerging neighborhood priorities surrounding inclusive development, cultural diversity, and anti-displacement strategies. The Whittier neighborhood is densely-populated, facing significant development pressure, and working to mobilize community members to proactively drive and implement an inclusive community vision rather than passively be shaped by market forces. The VISTA Tenant Organizer will have the opportunity meet and work alongside a diverse group of people and attend the Neighborhoods Now! intensive organizer training led by the Center for Urban and Regional Affairs (CURA) to further build their network. The VISTA will have the opportunity to gain an understanding of the inter-workings of a small nonprofit, volunteer engagement systems, program development, and the planning process behind a large-scale community event. Successful candidates will be motivated, self-starters and have comfort working with Google apps. The VISTA will also receive a monthly housing stipend of $875.00 and access to ongoing professional development opportunities.
