City of Salinas Business, Retention & Expansion Associate

The City of Salinas’ mission is to create a safe, healthy, prosperous, vibrant, and equitable community through targeted revitalization, sustainable policies, and well-designed land uses that facilitate a high quality of life and encourages community growth and partnerships. The Alisal is located on the Salinas’ East side and is home to a majority-minority population that is 94 percent Hispanic or Latino, with 33 percent of its residents living in poverty, compared to 21 percent of Salinas residents overall. The Alisal Plan is a community driven planning process that will communicate the collective vision of the residents and strategies for on-going collaboration and partnership between the City and community in addressing issues and opportunities specific to the Alisal. The Alisal Plan Support Team, comprised of five VISTA members, will work together on multifaceted strategies to alleviate poverty in the Alisal neighborhood by focusing on Economic Opportunity, Housing, and Homelessness.

Member Duties : Assist city staff and lead the continued development of the Business, Retention, Expansion (BRE) pilot- program in the Alisal area to later expand city-wide and promote economic growth in correlation with the Economic Development Five-Year Action Plan. Assist with updating the City’s Economic Development Element of the Five-Year Action Plan with the goal of using these economic indicators to evaluate progress in economic development through implementation of policy guidance and actions. The VISTA will research and assist staff in formulating a Small Business Growth and Sustainability Workshop Series. These workshops will aim to help individuals especially woman and minority-owned businesses enhance skill sets for increased employment opportunities for Salinas residents. Increase the city’s tourism and fill retail vacancies through the development of marketing materials, promotion of events and a commercial district neighborhood plan.
