The goal of this project is to increase access to food resources, especially fruits, vegetables and whole grains through the implementation of farm to school initiatives throughout the state. Despite Montana agriculture being a $4.6 billion industry, one in six Montanans struggle with hunger. Communities can improve their food security by increasing their connections to local and regional food producers, such as through farm to school initiatives. This VISTA project will move Montana children out of poverty by assessing and addressing training, resources and communication gaps resulting in the increased access to healthy foods through the implementation of farm to school in Montana schools, afterschool, and early care and education settings. Located in Bozeman, MT, the VISTA serving at this site will have excellent access to hiking, skiing, fishing, and a short drive to Yellowstone National Park.
