LKC: Shirley's Kitchen Cabinet Programs Development VISTA

Shirley’s Kitchen Cabinet has built a regional base that is ready to be activated for long term advocacy around issues. Shirley’s KC has experienced significant growth through outreach over the last year. We work to position, train, educate and wield collective power in some of the following ways: Shirley’s KC has built a community with close to 2000 Black women in the Kansas City region. We conducted surveying of Black women in Kansas City to ensure our analysis of the issues impacting Black women was data driven. We found that the top four issues include economic prosperity, healthcare, education, and the eradication of violence. These are the issues that guide our education, advocacy and organizing efforts to ensure we are addressing the issues that are important to Black women. To date we have collaborated with over 40 Black led community organizations, elected officials and national leaders to create opportunities to discuss the issues impacting the Black community. Over 200 Black women attended our Heartland Legislative Forum, a non-partisan event featuring congressional and local level candidates. It was the first bi-state congressional and one of the largest forums hosted in both states. In total, our digital media educational and training programs reached over 100,000 people. We conduct trainings and host events to keep our supporters educated and informed. From watch parties, brunches and Brain Trust sessions, we provide programming that is culturally relevant and responsive to keep supporters informed.
