AZ Refugee Program- Displaced Populations Health Liaison

The Arizona Refugee Resettlement Program (RRP) VISTA Project’s mission is to support refugees’ effective resettlement in Arizona. Refugees face a wide variety of difficult challenges in achieving self-sufficiency. These challenges include issues such as becoming familiar with their new country, securing an affordable place to live, learning about resources available to assist them in resettlement, finding and retaining employment, acquiring a new language, and learning how to access public health and behavioral health medical services. The Displaced Populations Health Liaison VISTA assignment will be placed at Catholic Charities in Phoenix and will improve access to healthcare for newly arrived refugees who are resettling in the Phoenix metropolitan region. The VISTA will work with established partnerships to increase the access to healthcare services for newly arrived forcibly displaced populations (FDPs) such as refugees, unaccompanied minors, and asylum-seekers, who are resettling in the Phoenix metropolitan region. This will be accomplished in a two tiered approach which includes- enhancing information and orientation provided to newly arrived FDPs and reaching out to health care and behavioral health providers to coordinate and implement appropriate trainings that will improve cultural competency and quality of care provided to FDPs.

Member Duties : The Displaced Populations Health Liaison will improve access to healthcare for newly arrived forcibly displaced populations (FDPs) such as refugees, unaccompanied minors, and asylum-seekers, who are resettling in the Phoenix metropolitan region. As FDPs resettle in Phoenix, barriers such as language, culture, transportation and lack of knowledge of the U.S. Medical/Mental Health systems can often impede or delay access to much needed services. As such, the VISTA will work within a collaborative project focused on psychological and physiological services for the referrals between the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and Catholic Charities (CC) to the other partners Dignity Health and Arizona State University.
