SMIF Small Farm Local Foods Economic Opportunity VISTA

The goal of this project is to build an expansive framework that identifies the opportunities and needs of an active food system in Southern Minnesota, which equitably serves all small-scale farmers, food makers, and consumers in need of nutritious, locally grown food. The project will build the capacity of small farmers, including emerging farmers who are Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC); and “makers,” in the areas of marketing, financial literacy, and other business supports to build capacity of food producers to serve communities’ needs for fresh local produce, protein, and cottage-made products and create stronger pathways to economic prosperity for emerging farmers. Year 2 of the project will focus on developing upon the learnings of Year 1’s community assessment. The VISTA will continue to convene an Advisory Committee to support the development of technical assistance or other programming, continue community based research to refine the learnings from Year 1, research funding opportunities, facilitate collaboration between technical assistance providers, and collaboratively develop technical assistance programming.
