STEM Educator - 4-H Grows Here Project

The Clark County AmeriCorps 4-H Grows Here Project and its Members are responsive to two large, identified problems: 1) youth lack the opportunities that prepare them to lead in life and career, especially in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM); and 2) youth attending school in one of the lowest ranking school systems in the nation, resulting in having low academic achievement. The 4-H intervention focuses on EDUCATION as Nevada faces a tremendous opportunity – educating youth to be prepared for the 21st-century workforce. The ability to expand economic development, maximize opportunities for youth, and sustain growth is dependent upon students who have both the technical skills and soft skills to succeed in careers and life. Members provide interventions to youth ages 5-19 to do just that.

Member Duties : The 4-H STEM Educator AmeriCorps Members will facilitate workshops at community centers, libraries, schools, and other locations to deliver educational lessons and attract youth and families through hands-on STEM learning opportunities to build excitement and desire to participate in long-term programming via 4-H community clubs. Once youth and families are established 4-H members, the STEM Educators will work closely with 4-H Adult/Parent Leader AmeriCorps Members to enhance STEM learning and facilitate STEM projects within clubs. They will also work closely with 4-H Community Development AmeriCorps Members when their STEM expertise is needed. Members will also work with Extension staff in spearheading the inaugural 4-H STEM Summit, a full-day, interactive conference. The conference will serve as an opportunity for youth to develop their STEM and soft skills needed for success in post-secondary education and the workplace.
