Claremont Learning Partnership Community Assessment VISTA

Claremont Learning Partnership works to increase literacy and educational access and attainment in the Claremont community. The Claremont Learning Partnership will conduct a community needs assessment focused primarily on our low-income children aged birth through eight and their families to identify the changes in our community and families post-COVID; to identify community supports that are still available for this population, and to identify service and support gaps. We will convene community forums, host parent cafes, and conduct surveys in Claremont elementary schools, preschools, child care centers, and homeless shelters. We will promote open discussion and foster meaningful dialogue to understand families’ experiences during the COVID crisis to determine how well they felt their needs were addressed during the pandemic. We will hire a VISTA who specializes in data collection to identify emerging trends and to compile all gathered data into a meaningful tool that can be used by our community partners in their work. The data will be collected, analyzed, and summarized into a comprehensive needs assessment report that will be disseminated among community partners and posted on the CLP webpage. The city of Claremont has a population of 12,967, of which 6.4% are under the age of five and 13.8% are between the ages of five and 18. Claremont graduates 88% of its students, but only 19.5% of high school graduates take advantage of higher educational opportunities. The per capita income in Claremont is $26,639, with 32.6% of residents having income that falls under 200% of the federal poverty level. We will also be embarking on a community wide developmental screening for all children between the ages of 0-5. This initiative will include the development of marketing materials and the setting up of meetings in the region. The VISTA will be charged with that task as well.

Member Duties : The VISTA project will give the Claremont Learning Partnership the capacity to achieve our goal of completing our needs assessment by fall of 2021. The information collected and compiled by the VISTA will be beneficial to our community partners in developing how social services programs can best serve our underserved citizens and identify service and support gaps among our low-income families. The VISTA will be responsible for scheduling community forums, parent cafes, and recruiting volunteers to conduct surveys. They will also be responsible for compiling all collected data into a meaningful tool. The data will be collected, analyzed, and summarized into a comprehensive needs assessment report. The VISTA will be incredibly useful in moving the project forward and compiling all collected data. To universally perform developmental screenings in our region, we first need to educate regarding the tool and the process. The VISTA will develop these promotional materials.
