Building Self Sufficiency
Hancock Resource Center is a Community Development Corporation that works to stabilize families and strengthens the community by addressing obstacles and barriers to housing and coordinating services to meet needs. HRC works with families experiencing homelessness, including Veterans and youth, to provide housing placement and supportive services to achieve self-sufficiency. The Family Services division works with victims and their families of victims. HRC serves about 1,200 families each year and expects that number to grow by at least 30% in the next three years. VISTA members are needed build capacity to serve low income families, especially those experiencing homelessness, youth and Veterans. Building Self Sufficiency, focuses on meeting three needs: the need for substance abuse prevention in youth in Hancock County; career-oriented mentoring for at-risk youth; and to build and expand housing opportunities for those experiencing homelessness, especially Veterans and youth. HRC has two available VISTA assignments with each member assigned to a different initiative. The Hancock Youth for Positive Efforts (HYPE) VISTA will help build the capacity of the community-wide coalition to prevent youth substance abuse, including alcohol and marijuana which are gateways to opiate use. The Hancock Youth Ready for Employment (HYRE) VISTA will be assigned to Family Services and will build the HYRE program. Hancock Youth Ready for Employment connects volunteer mentors with at-risk youth to help them plan career pathways.
