Building Self Sufficiency VISTA

Hancock Resource Center (HRC) is a Community Development Corporation that works to stabilize families and strengthen the community by addressing obstacles and barriers to housing and coordinating services to meet needs. HRC works with families experiencing homelessness, including Veterans and youth, to provide housing placement and supportive services to achieve self-sufficiency. VISTA members are needed to build capacity to serve those experiencing homelessness, youth, and Veterans. Building Self Sufficiency focuses on meeting three needs: substance abuse prevention in youth in Hancock County; career-oriented mentoring for at-risk youth; expanding housing opportunities for those experiencing homelessness, especially Veterans and youth. HRC has three available VISTA assignments with each member assigned to a different initiative. The Hancock Youth for Positive Efforts (HYPE) VISTA activities include conducting a community assessment, data management including collecting, aggregating, and analyzing stakeholder surveys, plan and coordinate focus groups, develop prevention education programs, and develop youth leadership programs. The member will learn about the Strategic Prevention Framework and evidence-based approaches to prevention. The Hancock Youth Ready for Employment (HYRE) VISTA activities include planning activities to raise community awareness and engagement for the HYRE program, expanding and strengthening partnerships, identifying financial resources, policy and program guideline development, conducting community outreach, and volunteer and recruitment management. The Veteran VISTA will collaborate with program management develop and update housing and employment program policies, identify community resources, and conduct outreach to community stakeholders.
