Brown University RIFLI Literacy Volunteers VISTA

The Brown University AmeriCorps VISTA Fellowship is a full-time service opportunity hosted through the Swearer Center at Brown University. Founded by Brown University President, Howard R. Swearer, The Swearer Center for Public Service is a community of scholars, students, practitioners, and community members that work together to build on community strengths and address community challenges. Through the creative capacities of our students, faculty, and community partners we explore, build, and implement collaborative and strategic projects, programs, and initiatives. Our work yields transformative learning and positive sustainable change through collective action. Interested applicants apply for a VISTA position at a local partner organization, state agency, or Swearer Center department to build capacity in organizations fighting poverty. These agencies work in the education, health, arts and/or economic justice sector. Current external Brown University AmeriCorps VISTA placement sites include: Beat the Streets Providence, Breakthrough Providence, House of Hope Community Development Corporation, Inspiring Minds, Providence After School Alliance, Providence Public Library, Social Enterprise Greenhouse, and Youth In Action. This VISTA member will work closely with Providence Public Library (PPL) and Rhode Island Family Literacy Initiative (RIFLI). In line with PPL’s mission to provide educational programming for adults and expand services for individuals beyond current programming, this VISTA member will build the library’s capacity to plan, organize, start and expand a Pro-Literacy style volunteer run tutoring program over the next three years. This will help serve hundreds of learners who now have no or little access to these services. The Pro-Literacy style is evidence-based and is proven to be an effective method for improving the educational and employment skills of students enrolled nationwide.
