Financial Education Program--Program Coordinator

Catholic Charities’ Financial Stability Network (FSN) empowers low-income individuals through pro bono one-on-one financial coaching, tax assistance, and financial education. We serve approximately 600 low-income individuals in Washington DC and Maryland on an annual basis through our three programs – Tax Assistance including VITA, Financial Education, and Financial Coaching. A critical component of this network is our VITA program. Catholic Charities administered a VITA site at the Columbus Law School at Catholic University of America for the past four tax filing seasons. In addition to its VITA work, the FSN administers Financial Education Classes taught by trained volunteers at senior centers, community centers, parishes and other locations throughout the Catholic Charities’ service region. These classes cover particular aspects of personal finance in an easy-to-understand, concise manner. The Financial Education Program utilizes content created by FDIC (Money Smart curriculum). The FSN’s third service, the Financial Coaching Program, provides individual counseling to clients to teach them fundamental budgeting, checking, and related money management skills; provides advice as individuals work through serious financial challenges; and partners with clients to build assets in order to achieve financial stability. When an individual enrolls in the financial coaching program, the client is paired with a highly qualified volunteer who spends a full year working with this individual. This coaching is typically done in monthly one-on-one, in-person sessions and is tailored to accommodate goals unique to each client and with recognition of the individual’s level of financial understanding.
