Detroit AmeriCorps Youth Success Program

Overview: Almost 60% of youth in Detroit are identified as chronically absent, putting them behind in their academic career. Chronic absence is a complex problem that stems from the lack of resources in households and in the community. To address the this issue, the Detroit AmeriCorps Youth Success program will support 25 AmeriCorps members throughout the city of Detroit to serve as Youth Success Coaches (YSCs) and Engagement & Resource Members (ERMs) at 9 schools (charter and public) in Detroit. A key indicator of student success is regular school attendance and ensuring youth have a positive role model in their life as well as families having the support they need that will directly lessen the burden they face is a major contributor to chronic absenteeism. Through this service and experience, members will make an impact on youth's educational futures.
