Kentucky College Coaches High School 23-24

Kentucky College Coaches are AmeriCorps State service members tasked with acting as a peer, or near-peer, to either high school students, or post-secondary students, to be successful in all aspects of their school career. These priority students will be students who 1) will likely get through high school, but who are unlikely to go to college; 2) who would be first-generation college attendees; and/or 3) who are from low-income families. At the high school level, they are encouraged to think about, apply for and achieve acceptance to college. At the college level, the near-peer mentors will help the students engage in the school environment, experience academic success and graduate with their chosen postsecondary degree or certificate of completion.

Member Duties : Kentucky College Coaches (KCC) AmeriCorps members will mentor a "core" group of high school students, approximately 15-20 per grade level (grades 9-12). These coaches will help the core students navigate the steps to college and/or career, including activities such as career exploration, reflection, scholarship and financial aid, college applications, job training, and more. KCCs will contribute to whole school college and career readiness activities, such as FAFSA completion and career fairs. The KCC mentors on postsecondary campuses will continue with the initiative by helping the college students acclimate and adjust to their new environments. Similar topical areas will be covered, but will be focused on the student’s college career and the broader range of choices, behaviors and responsibilities that come with their enrollment. The mentors will increase the capacity of institutions to meet each student's needs.
