SJSU Civic Action Fellowship

San José State University’s Center for Community Learning & Leadership is excited to enroll it’s second cohort of Civic Action Fellows. As the oldest public higher education institution in the west and founding California State University in the system, SJSU has a rich history of community involvement. The SJSU Civic Action Fellows will continue our commitment to our community by ensuring youth attending partner agencies have computing and digital skills that will propel them in their education and future careers. Current research suggests that low income students are far less likely than their more financially stable peers to possess requisite skills to succeed in higher education and professional career trajectories, including digital literacy, competency in applied math, and computer science self-efficacy. Our local region, known as Silicon Valley for its disproportionate concentration of influential technology companies, experiences stark divides in economic and educational resources related to digital literacy and technical knowledge. As part of the Civic Action Fellowship, current undergraduate and graduate students will serve local communities by providing access to underserved third to sixth grade youth to provide exposure and skills in computer programming, increase knowledge and self-efficacy in computer science, and increase awareness and motivation regarding the application of computer programming to a variety of careers. The Civic Action Fellowship is a first-in-the-nation initiative designed to help students pay for college through public service while using a combination of federal and state funding. The Civic Action Fellowship within the state of California is comprised of of a coalition of public and private universities throughout.
