Social Media, Donor & Public Relations VISTA (Chicago)

The Gateway to the Great Outdoors program was developed to allow underserved and impoverished students across the US equitable access to a comprehensive environmental education. The mission of GGO is to empower underserved youth to enhance their scientific literacy of their local natural environment through classroom and field-based environmental education and leadership development activities. This program allows students to experience the natural wonders of the outdoors, while also providing them with strong mentorship and academic support. While other environmental education programs focus solely on mentorship, augmented curricula or outdoor adventure, GGO is unique in that it integrates the strength of all three: (1) weekly STEM-based classroom enrichment related to the environment, (2) monthly outdoor activities that support classroom learning, and (3) year-round mentoring by local university students and community members.

Member Duties : As the Social Media, Donor & Public Relations VISTA at Gateway to the Great Outdoors (GGO), you will be making a difference as you help secure financial stability and community awareness about GGO. You will write press releases, develop press kits, design media materials, and conduct outreach specific to Chicago. You will also build the financial capacity of GGO by securing media partnerships and developing new community and individual partnerships, thus creating new streams of revenue and outreach protocols. Additionally, you will be responsible for using existing donor information to create an outreach history database for future GGO employees. This VISTA will build GGO's capacity to increase the revenue necessary to continue GGO programming. Expanding GGO's finances promotes GGO's ability to achieve student academic success and promote healthy futures, thus ending the cycle of poverty for low-income students.
