*BMVP - Flattening the Curve through Community Advocacy

Research shows that low-income communities are more likely to be exposed to the coronavirus, have higher mortality rates, and suffer economic hardships. Due to the lack of resources to prepare against the coronavirus, those in poverty also face a higher risk of contracting and spreading the virus. Poverty often leads to poor health outcomes because it contributes to the spread of disease, undermines the effectiveness of health services, results in higher morbidity, and increased marginalization that can create a vicious cycle of poverty and poor health (Madi & Hussain, 2007). The reverse can also be true in that poor health can lead to loss of jobs and wages. Increasing health promotion, access to care, and support networks is a primary strategy to improve the health conditions of those experiencing poverty over the long-term. The benefit of raising awareness around proper health behaviors to combat COVID-19 and the need to wear personal protective equipment is that we offer community solutions to reducing the transmission of COVID-19 in our community. For the unforeseeable future, the CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain. In order to encourage Montanans to adhere to this recommendation, the Billings Community Foundation (BCF) has collaborated with a volunteer organization in Billings to provide volunteer management and perform administrative duties in relation to mask distribution for the Billings area. However, as the need for personal protective equipment grows, the organization has exceeded the capacity needed to recruit / manage additional volunteers. The Billings Community Foundation's mission is to help individual donors and charitable organizations meet the needs of the Greater Yellowstone Region.
