* BMVP - Coronavirus Response Initiative

Montana Department of Health and Human Services reports COVID-19 cases are low in Yellowstone County when compared to other communities across the country; however, with the State’s “stay at home” order lifted, positive test results are on the rise. While there are ongoing efforts within the community to highlight and share disease transmission/prevention strategies, there is a lack of detailed data relative to needs and response priorities. Community response appears to be fragmented. More united response efforts are needed to protect people living in poverty, as research shows they are more vulnerable to negative health outcomes because of socioeconomic status alone. The 2020 Community Health Needs Assessment Report indicates 10.1% of Yellowstone County total population lives below the federal poverty level. In addition, the Montana unemployment rate went from 3.5% in December 2019 to 7.7% in April 2020, likely increasing the number of Montanans experiencing poverty and potentially damaging health outcomes. The Community Development Division is a catalyst for joining community partners with resources to increase access to housing, to create a sustainable community, and to promote neighborhood revitalization. A localized, community-wide assessment will begin Summer 2020 through this Division. The results will assist in planning a coordinated response to COVID-19 in our area. Funding resources will be mobilized to increase access to: health education on COVID-19; social service support; and prevention, intervention, and treatment programs. This project will build the capacity of local organizations to respond to increasing needs and ideally limit the spread of the virus. It will alleviate poverty by connecting low-income persons to programs that provide prevention, treatment, health and wellness, education, and employment services so they may achieve success in acquiring a healthy lifestyle and the opportunity to move out of poverty.
