2020 Girl Scouts of Central MD-Healthy Choices
 
 
 
The Health/Wellness program developer will help address the obesity epidemic in Baltimore and impact the low educational achievement levels produced by poor nutrition. The program will provide access to healthy food choices, and increased physical activity. This position will sustain and expand on the existing partnerships with local subject matter experts including Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, resident food equity advisors, the Urban Orchard Project, the Heart Association,the Maryland Extension Service and others to collaborate on the design of a refined curriculum that is targeted to middle school aged girls, modeling, evaluation, resources and systems necessary for sustained implementation of programs in underserved communities.

Member Duties : The AmeriCorps VISTA will expand capacity at GSCM to reach underserved communities of girls K-12with emphasis this year on grades 6 through 8,for the delivery of age-appropriate, culturally competent health and wellness programming. The health component will take on new elements this year with the added considerations of a changing body through adolescence, and the impact on self-image and self-esteem that accompanies these changes. Good nutrition and physical activity in the context of the changes girls experience through this process will be an added element to the curriculum. The VISTA member will improve access to nutritious food for economically disadvantaged girls and young women and increased opportunities for physical activities including outdoor activities, and expand the scope of healthy futures to include emotional health and wellness.
