Community Action VISTA Food Security Study Specialist
 
 
 
Engage in research to study the nutritional effectiveness of doorstep-delivered food pantry services in a joint effort between St. Ambrose University and Community Action of Eastern Iowa, beginning with a pilot research project in the summer of 2020. Based on the results of the pilot study, additional research and/or changes to the doorstep-delivered food pantry services of Community Action of Eastern Iowa will be planned and implemented, and the VISTA Volunteer will be a lead member of the planning and implementation of all research and/or changes. The overarching goal is the improvement of food pantry services to community members who have serious medical conditions, altering what is currently provided to better meet the medical, nutritional, and cultural needs of affected households.

Member Duties : The Food Security Study Specialist VISTA member will: 1. Implement a pilot research project to study the effectiveness of doorstep-delivered food pantry items. 2. Survey households participating in the study, collecting information and feedback as described in the study design(s), and will maintain careful documentation. 3. Under direction of the faculty at St Ambrose University, will modify food pantry boxes to meet the needs of individual households, injecting choice and responsiveness to medical need into the food pantry boxes. 4. Develop recipes and consumer nutritional education based on research results. 5. Design and implement further study. 6. Plan and implement changes to the food pantry delivery process based on the research, injecting choice and efficacy into the system. 7. Recruit and train additional volunteers to deliver food pantry boxes. 8. Develop agency capacity, particularly related to technology, to sustain changes to the system.
