The goal of the Northern Illinois University (NIU) VISTA Project is to leverage the AmeriCorps VISTA to build the capacity and reach of the Huskie Food Pantry and to expand resources to students of need through work in the Center for Student Assistance. In addition, the VISTA will be an integral part of expanding the access to high impact learning and leadership opportunities for Pell-Eligible NIU students. The VISTA will assess pantry operations, update volunteer management practices, diversify the supply chain for the pantry and conduct needs assessment. The VISTA will extend the focus on “Healthy Futures” by developing new partnerships and opportunities in the community for Pell-eligible NIU students. The biweekly living allowance for this position is $513.94. In addition to the benefits listed above, the host site will provide the following: on campus housing, a fitness center pass, a parking pass, and various professional development opportunities. The AmeriCorps VISTA serving at Northern Illinois University will be part of a dynamic, motivated corps with Campus Compact VISTA. Serving as a member of a corps provides VISTAs the chance to connect with members throughout multiple states, create a network of support, and to share resources. As the intermediary, Campus Compact, a national non-profit, supports the professional and personal growth of VISTA members through a variety of professional development opportunities and in-person trainings including overnight retreats throughout their service year. Member Duties : The Northern Illinois University VISTA will assist the Center for Student Assistance in coordinating services to students in need. The VISTA will assist the current Huskie Food Pantry coordinator to increase capacity and reach of the pantry, along with diversifying service and donations that the pantry is able to offer. Through needs assessment and outreach, the VISTA will provide support in determining the areas of greatest need and new community partnerships to help guide the work in the Center for Student Assistance. The VISTA will work to develop resources related to food and housing insecurity for low-income students. Through the development programming and research on scholarship opportunities the VISTA will build capacity for low-income Pell-eligible students to participate in high impact community engagement, internships, job opportunities and scholarships to support college retention and success and improve job placement following graduation.
