Safe Routes to Health AmeriCorps - Brilliant Detroit

The Safe Routes to Health (SRTH) program focuses on connecting residents in underserved areas to resources that address healthy habits to help residents thrive. Members will serve as Community Liaison Coordinators that will increase the capacity for health education and community outreach within their host site. Members will commit their time to promote healthy futures: they will fill gaps and enhance assets in underserved, low-income communities to help residents gain access to supportive environments for healthy eating and physical activity. Each member is assigned a site supervisor who provides mentorship, supervision, and access to professional development opportunities at the host site. Members also participate in ongoing professional development, team-building, and at least two outside/group service activities. Members will receive training in a variety of areas to support service projects, gain valuable skills and real-world experience. Brilliant Detroit (host site) works alongside families with children ages 0-8 to ensure they have everything they need to be school-ready, healthy, and stable. SRTH member at Brilliant Detroit will serve 900 hours over 8 months, averaging 25 hours a week. The planned start date is January 18 – September 30, 2022. TO APPLY: please complete the member application linked here and email your resume and cover letter to the Program Director. NOTE: Service activities may be partially or fully remote during the COVID-19 pandemic, this is subject to change as new guidance is issued.

Member Duties : Members will serve as local champions to help community members learn about health, wellness, and physical activity through direct service activities in two areas: promoting active lifestyles and engaging communities through outreach. Each host site utilizes members in unique ways to address the need of their communities. Some examples include co-leading Brilliant Detroit Health Day fairs, assisting “garden heroes” who help maintain gardens at six of our neighborhood hubs, leading outdoor community cleanup days, and helping facilitate an after-school cooking class (which may be done virtually). Members will participate in scheduled AmeriCorps days of service, trainings, and professional development.
