Missouri Green Schools Support VISTA

Missouri Green Schools (MGS) is a program to help schools improve health, reduce environmental impact, and develop a culture of sustainability. MGS creates a pathway for state and national recognition, and provides a variety of one-on-one services to support under-resourced schools in achieving “green” goals and earning recognition. Missouri Green Schools is managed by the Missouri Environmental Education Association and the U.S. Green Building Council-Missouri Gateway Chapter. VISTAs will work in St. Louis but have the opportunity to interact with schools throughout the state. As an MGS VISTA, you’ll train school staff in action planning, benchmarking, tracking their progress, and you’ll help schools troubleshoot challenges along the way. You’ll also help build the network of partners across the state who support the vision of all Missouri students learning and thriving in a healthy, green school. You’ll receive professional development training and networking opportunities throughout your year of service, and you’ll work with a team of 3 other VISTAs to utilize your unique skills, talents, and interests to help us launch this transformational program. In addition to outreach, strategic planning, and program administration training, other opportunities for skill-building include marketing, database management, webinar development, and facilitating professional development. We are looking for lifelong learners who are collaborative, communicative and passionate about kids and the environment to join our team. Candidates need a reliable vehicle or comfort with utilizing public transportation. MGS will provide some transportation cost assistance and grocery gift cards in addition to the VISTA living allowance of $13,399. VISTAs will be provided with office space (remote working flexibility) and laptops during the program service period of September 1, 2020 through August 30, 2021. Member Duties : VISTA members’ service will revolve around 1) providing one-on-one support for under-resourced schools to achieve green goals and 2) conducting outreach to schools and partners. VISTAs will receive training to guide schools in using a systems approach to become a green school--a school that brings an environmental and equity lens to decision-making. VISTAs will attend train-the-trainer workshops and will be prepared to utilize phone, email, Zoom, and in-person visits to help schools shift policies and practices and track their progress in improving student health and lowering environmental impact. VISTAs will also help MGS team members develop and maintain foundational materials for this new statewide program. The VISTA team will develop and maintain an outreach database and calendar, create promotional materials like case studies and flyers for various audiences, and develop training materials like an onboarding webinar for new MGS schools and how-to-guides for future MGS staff.
