Technological advances are quickly paving the way to an electric grid where renewable energy coupled with energy efficiency investments can be a major boon to local economies. This transformation could build local wealth, create jobs, and alleviate the burden of rising energy costs. The availability of clean energy solutions means that a more democratic energy system, which offers citizens greater say over how they generate and consume power, is not only possible but the only equitable model. But there are major barriers to realizing this potential in the Tennessee Valley. In the absence of local community control, the Tennessee Valley Authority and the public power utilities which distribute energy to ratepayers have erected barriers to distributed clean energy and energy efficiency, enacted harmful rate structures, and allowed toxic waste from coal fired fossil plants to disproportionately burden rural and low-income families. Appalachian Voices’ Energy Democracy Program in Tennessee seeks to advance a grassroots movement for a democratic, clean, and equitable energy system in the Tennessee Valley through widespread outreach and education, community organizing and empowerment, coalition building and advocacy.
