Mosaic in Action Fund Development VISTA, OneStar

Mosaic in Action seeks to improve the lives of Brazoria County residents by working towards safe, sanitary and secure homes for all. We are a volunteer-driven organization, improving our community’s health and wellbeing through the repair of substandard housing. Three years ago, Hurricane Harvey devastated this region, and Mosaic in Action quickly went to work repairing and rebuilding homes using volunteer labor and AmeriCorps NCCC teams. Many of these homes were in poor condition prior to Harvey’s destruction. Now that storm recovery work is nearing completion, Mosaic in Action is reorganizing to tackle non-storm related housing issues. Located between bustling Houston and the Gulf coast, Brazoria is a diverse county. While northern urban areas like Pearland are prosperous, this is in marked contrast to the more rural parts of the county, where some residents live in food deserts and without public utilities. Given our county’s coastal location, with frequent adverse weather, many people are living in ever-deteriorating housing conditions. Substandard housing is less able to withstand severe weather, and each new weather event forces residents further into a downward spiral, where escalating repair costs and a decreasingly habitable property, are paired with lower property values and worsening safety and health effects. Mosaic in Action undertakes to reverse this decline, to improve the health and well-being of Brazoria County residents caught in this situation. We have already assisted over 270 families in the past three years, including 16 complete rebuilds of destroyed homes. To help broaden our mission, we are searching for a motivated individual who can help create a development strategy, through researching and writing grant applications, and increasing donor retention and engagement, as we seek to provide safe, sanitary and secure housing for all our county’s residents.

Member Duties : The Fund Development VISTA fills an essential role in Mosaic in Action’s (MiA) evolving mission. As we transition from storm recovery to restoring substandard housing, we need a comprehensive development strategy for operations. While collaborating with the Executive Director & Board of Directors, the Fund Development VISTA will prepare this plan, which will include researching grant opportunities, ensuring alignment of MiA’s mission within the constraints of our key funders, and the establishment of a more comprehensive donor database. Potential donors from fields such as economic development, public health, housing and rural affairs will be the focus. The Fund Development VISTA will research, apply for, and secure grant opportunities in these diverse areas & pursue funding prospects. The Development VISTA will also train & equip other staff members to use the donor database for ongoing operations. An essential part of this work will be to establish near and future fiscal targets.
