Iowa Produce Gleaning Program

"Gleaning" is collecting leftover crops from farmers' fields after they have been commercially harvested or on fields where it is not economically profitable to harvest. There are thousands of pounds of quality produce lost each year in Iowa which this program seeks to recover. Farm gleaning partnerships are an opportunity to expand access to fresh, nutritious produce for food insecure Iowans. Staffing, volunteer recruitment, program development, and sustainability are common challenges among organizations with small gleaning or discontinued gleaning programs in Iowa. This initiative seeks to fill gaps in existing programs and offer opportunity for launching new gleaning initiatives across the state.
