Chicago HOPES for Kids- Volunteer Coordinator VISTA
 
 
 
The mission of Chicago HOPES for Kids is to provide shelter-based educational support for children living in Chicago’s homeless shelters. We provide a welcoming space at each shelter where students receive homework help, literacy, and enrichment services to succeed academically. Chicago HOPES for Kids currently has tutoring programs at 8 shelters in Chicago and provides services to over 100 children, 3-4 afternoon/evenings per week with over 150 volunteers participating each year. Chicago HOPES for Kids is seeking VISTA members who have an interest in helping children who are experiencing homelessness succeed in school, while working to enhance the HOPES program and create a model for organizational sustainability and program expansion. The goal of our project is threefold: To expand the Chicago HOPES for Kids academic and enrichment program to additional shelters in Chicago; to strengthen and further develop the structure and components of our existing program; and to create a sustainable model for community outreach and diversify our volunteer opportunities. Candidates for this position will help in the areas of volunteer recruitment and retention, partnerships, public relations, and program development. The most crucial parts of the project will be to build long-term sustainability through the identification and establishment of ongoing sources for volunteers and community partners, while enhancing the math and literacy components of the program as well and developing programs at additional shelters. As we expand to other shelters in Chicago, volunteers will be critical to the success of the program. VISTA members will work to foster community awareness for Chicago HOPES for Kids, our mission, and the issue of child homelessness. They will identify and help establish partnerships with local universities, community organizations, and businesses; and develop a STEM curriculum and methods for data collection and program evaluation.

Member Duties : The Vista member will work to improve and expand HOPES volunteer recruitment, onboarding, ongoing training, recognition, and appreciation while ensuring all efforts are sustainable. This member will be responsible for the HOPES newsletter and updating the volunteer resource page on the website. The VISTA members will support the development of our literacy mentors (6-8th grade) volunteer program. This VISTA member will work to establish effective and lasting community partnerships to sustain shelter sites. Additionally, VISTA members will build relational capacity when Chicago HOPES for Kids programming expands to additional shelters to ensure that HOPES programming has volunteers needed to support new sites.
