SMC VISTA - Thrive & Stanford

Saint Mary’s College of California (SMC) is a proud grantee of AmeriCorps. We receive funding from them to operate our VISTA project, which is designed to strengthen partnerships between higher education and nonprofit organizations in an effort to alleviate poverty and create positive social change. We host a yearly multi-campus VISTA program in which AmeriCorps members serve at nonprofit/public agencies and partnering higher education institutions. Our VISTAs endeavor to build the organizational, administrative, and financial capacity of agencies that provide education services, foster economic development and environmental stewardship, and otherwise support low-income communities, in part by leveraging resources from higher education institutions. As a VISTA in our program, you will serve 4 days per week at a nonprofit agency and 1 day per week at a partnering higher education institution. You will be connected with a cohort of VISTAs as well as a network of our program alumni. Your specific responsibilities at each service site are unique, but all of our VISTA assignments have two focus areas: (1) Capacity Building - Reinforce the long-term efficacy and/or efficiency of the nonprofit/public agency with a specific sustainable project that should continue to benefit the agency after VISTA service. See below for more information on site-specific objectives. (2) Campus Liaison - Support and coordinate partnerships between the nonprofit/public agency and higher education institution.
