Project Discovery Athletes for Education VISTA

Project Discovery assists students from predominantly low-income households or students who would be the first in the family to attend college. Project Discovery combines a nationally recognized curriculum of workshops that improve study skills, time management, and financial planning assistance to students and parents applying for both admissions and financial aid. Project Discovery is developing a pilot program called Athletes for Education (A4E). The A4E program’s primary target clientele are low-income and first generation students who are at risk for dropping out of high school if they lose their eligibility to play sports. A significant number of high school students remain in high school solely for the opportunity to play sports. These sports minded but academically disinterested students are at risk for failing grades, losing their eligibility to play sports, and eventually dropping out of high school. The goal of A4E is to leverage the student's interest in sports to promote academic achievement by providing training opportunities to expand their athletic capacities. These training opportunities are tied to academic achievement and the Project Discovery curriculum that is aimed at college attendance. The ultimate goal is for the student's academic and athletic performance to improve so they can qualify for both college admission and athletic scholarships. A pilot program last year was successful, with nine out of ten students who were at risk of high school failure graduating from high school on time. All nine are enrolled in college and eight received athletic scholarships (one received an academic scholarship). A VISTA member will turn A4E into a sustainable program.

Member Duties : The role of VISTA Volunteer in the upcoming year will be to help formalize the Athletes for Education (A4E) program into a sustainable program. The VISTA member will write a program and procedure manual, develop strategies to scale the program into a geographically broader program, and apply for funding sources to help support the program. These efforts will provide for the efficiency and longevity of the program. Part of the plan to develop A4E sustainability is to operate sports training camps and recruitment venues where smaller colleges can have an opportunity to scout athletes from rural areas. Project Discovery expects these events to be revenue producing. The VISTA will be involved in the planning and implementation in the setup and operation of a pilot fundraiser and recruitment camp. The VISTAS will also document the processes to operate such events.
