Wakanyeja Ki Tokeyahci (WT): Children First school

Wakanyeja Tokeyahci Wouspe Ti (WT), or the Children First Learning Center, will be an innovative and unique elementary school committed to using a balance of individualized student-led learning, project-based learning in a cultural context, and an emphasis on critical thinking and problem-solving. When fully implemented, our school will serve 72 students from kindergarten to the fifth grade, beginning in fall 2020 with our first kindergarten class and growing one grade per year until 2025. WT will support the holistic development of our students in four interrelated program components: Academic Preparedness Holistic Wellness and Leadership Lakota Language and Culture Indigenous Identity We bring these four parts together around wotakuye, the Lakota concept of kinship, and interrelatedness. By bringing these parts together, WT will provide its students with transforming education experience. Our students will stand for everything Lakota. They will be academically prepared to succeed in school, career, and life. They will be healthy and know how to lead. They will be fluent in the ways and language of the Lakota people. They will be secure in their identity. They will be the future builders of a prosperous Lakota nation.
