MTCC AmeriCorps Part-Time College Coach - Soft Landing Msla

The Soft Landing Missoula youth program aims to create opportunities for success, emotional and physical wellbeing, and social engagement for refugee and immigrant youth. By developing and offering a range of services for youth and young adults, Soft Landing Missoula aims to create an environment and community space where these clients have access to academic, social, and recreational opportunities that support positive social determinants of health. SLM offers after-school academic mentoring, college access support, and summer programming as well as social and recreational opportunities for elementary, middle, and high school-aged refugee youth. Accessing higher education can be a huge challenge for refugees and immigrants, especially navigating a school system foreign to the ones they may have grown up with (if they had access to education in their country of origin at all). Creating programming for academic and social success in middle school and high school sets students up for opportunities to pursue secondary education in the long term. We are beginning to see some of the graduates of our programs successfully enter college or enroll in college preparation programs with the intent of being successful once they enter college. Soft Landing Missoula collaborates with community partners to support refugee and immigrant students in their academic success to improve outcomes for higher education later in life. By creating a safe and supportive learning environment, refugees can engage academically and socially to increase their confidence and academic success. SLM believes in the power of shared human experience, the celebration of milestones big and small, and the building of cultural bridges through the common languages of food, soccer, and music. Their programs create a soft landing place for immigrant and refugee families in Missoula and help to foster a welcoming, informed community that is both excited and equipped to support new neighbors.
