MTCC AmeriCorps Team Member - Soft Landing
More than 65 million people worldwide have been uprooted from home by conflict and natural disaster. In response to the growing epidemic of displaced people, a group of concerned community members came together to responsibly consider welcoming refugees to Missoula, and to be at least a small part of alleviating suffering for families in turmoil. Soft Landing helps Missoula to be a welcoming, supportive, and informed community that can assist refugees to integrate and thrive, and is committed to providing community education and outreach to make this endeavor as positive as possible for all. The refugee community in Missoula is at risk for poverty and members find it difficult to pursue high-quality education due to lack of information, lack of support, financial constraints, and familial responsibilities. Refugee youth in particular struggle to adjust to the American public school system, often attending schools in low income areas, facing discrimination and low teacher expectations, and lacking knowledge about how to access higher education and associated financial support.
