Enter your program description (2000 characters or less) 826 Boston’s services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with individualized attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. We provide after-school tutoring, field trips, creative writing workshops, in-school tutoring, help for English Language Learners, and in-depth publishing projects. 826 Boston is part of a national network, founded by the award-winning author Dave Eggers. Since opening in 2007, 826 Boston has delivered its free youth writing and tutoring programs to more than 25,000 students and has been recognized by The Boston Globe as one of the best places in the city to volunteer. 826 Boston student writers have published their work in The New York Times, The Boston Globe, and in numerous award-winning 826 Boston books. In 2014, the 826 network garnered the American Literacy Prize from the Library of Congress for its pioneering work to eradicate illiteracy in the United States. The Family & Community Partnerships Specialist VISTA will serve on the Out-of-School-Time Team supporting field trips for classes from area schools, after-school and evening tutoring programs, and summer programming. This individual will leverage community partners to recruit recurring volunteers, identify resources, and recruit students for various programs. The member will engage families via ongoing communication, resource sharing, special events, and feedback systems. The member will create training guides to effectively leverage the support of volunteers and interns. The member will be included in all-team trainings and meetings, collaborate with staff and volunteers to meet programmatic goals, and receive ongoing supervision and coaching to carry out position duties. A monthly travel stipend is available to all service members. The member will serve two evenings per week as part of their hours.

Member Duties : The Family & Community Partnerships Specialist will be the main liaison to families, engaging them via special events, as well as framing and facilitating feedback from families. The member will also support tutors serving in 826 Boston’s programming and will assist in building up trainings and handbooks designed to improve volunteers’ skills and knowledge. This member will connect with local public schools to recruit and schedule classes to attend our twice-weekly field trips; gather information regarding appropriate accommodations the program can make to ensure access to students with a wide variety of needs; and support the publication of two student-written storybooks per week. The member will work with community agencies to recruit students and enroll them in programming and maximize the reach of under-enrolled programming times. The member will report on field trip program goals and highlights quarterly. The member will support 826 Boston’s Field Trip program two days per week.
