CCNYPA York College of Pennsylvania VISTA

Generations of Hope (GOH) was developed in the summer of 2018 by a team of York College students who were inspired to expand educational and mentorship opportunities available to York City children, who are statistically less likely to graduate from high school and pursue higher education opportunities compared to students from other school districts in York County. The GOH program connects 6th, 7th, and 8th graders at McKinley School, a k-12 educational institution in the York City school district, with a team of York College student volunteers who serve as mentors throughout the year. Many of these mentors are part of the York College Community Opportunity Scholarship Program and are graduates of the York City school district themselves. Middle-school students who participate in the GOH program for multiple years also have the opportunity to become peer mentors to new participants as they advance through the program. Generations of Hope aims to increase the rate of York City students who experience success in their K-12 educational experience and who consider post-secondary education opportunities. GOH also aims to inspire middle school students and college students to serve as leaders, mentors, and changemakers in their communities.
