MORE – Workplace Engagement Adult Literacy (LitMN)

The immigration landscape has changed dramatically in recent years. Many New Americans are working, but often the jobs require few skills and pay low wages. When New Americans enter the job force, it’s difficult to find time and resources to increase English or workforce readiness that can lead to better paying positions. It’s imperative that our services change to meet evolving needs of New Americans in our community. Many people MORE serves experience the trauma of displacement and poverty. They face challenges communicating fluently within major American systems that impact daily lives - children’s schools, landlords, public transportation, employment, healthcare, grocery shopping. Participants are excited to be with us because MORE is warm and welcoming. Working together, our most vulnerable citizens are empowered to live a life of peace, outside of poverty, and make our entire community stronger. At MORE, Respect, Compassion, Growth and Creativity are at the forefront of the work we do. We believe that we have just as much to learn from our participants as they do from us. Our Literacy Leader will be part of an organization that works to make our participants feel safe. MORE is the “model of how to respect, love, and support people from all over the world who are trying to build new lives in the United States,” as one stakeholder says. If you connect to this approach, then this is the place for you. *Position is part of the Literacy Leadership AmeriCorps VISTA program of Literacy Minnesota (LitMN), which places about 20 AmeriCorps VISTA members with nonprofits, public agencies and Tribal Nations located in MN and WI to build their capacity to improve literacy for children, youth, adults or families. Literacy Minnesota fosters an organizational culture that is welcoming and inclusive to all. Applications reviewed on rolling basis until filled. Alternate start dates may be available.
