CCNYPA SUNY Buffalo State College VISTA

The projects coordinated and implemented by the VISTA member will impact economic opportunity, food security, and education programs in an area of Buffalo where poverty is more than 35% and in a Census tract directly outside of the campus where the poverty rate is 65%. In this neighborhood, the racial makeup insists that racial justice efforts are integrated into all project focuses, as 34% are Black/African-American, 24% white, 21% Hispanic, and 20% Asian. Buffalo State’s involvement as one of only 35 higher education institutions involved in the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities/Democracy Collaborative Anchor Learning Network provides us with an opportunity to make significant progress to institutionalize the anchor mission on our campus and be leaders in transforming the national perception of higher education. The VISTA member will work under the guidance of the Anchor Institution Committee, to implement an Anchor District to include the college, nonprofit organizations, physical resources, and business partnerships; and to support civic engagement work that serves low-income residents utilizing post-secondary students and community volunteers.
