CCNYPA Wilkes University VISTA

The Office of Civic Engagement at Wilkes University is partnering with Schools and Homes in Education after school program (SHINE) to enhance the Reading Mentors program. This partnership represents an exciting opportunity to further develop a reading and literacy component to the STEAM-rich SHINE program. The SHINE program has five goals that include improving academic performance, improve student behavior and attendance, increasing knowledge of STEAM and facilitating family involvement to improve family literacy. The Reading Mentors program provides for a qualified tutor to work with local elementary school students, encouraging them in areas of literacy and reading which will further help in their school development. The VISTA will recruit, train, and coordinate reading mentors who will implement after-school level-appropriate reading interventions, provide social-emotional support to youth enrolled in the program, and enrich the engagement of families to support the family literacy focus. The VISTA will coordinate monthly meetings with project partners, assist in planning and implementing tutor training, and will develop a student leader process with the goal of establishing a self-sustaining tutoring program. In year two of this program, the VISTA will focus on a student leadership structure that will further solidify the sustainability of the program. In addition, the VISTA will work on deliverables such as the website, newsletters, and a program guide with ongoing planning and implementation.
