*Applicant will need to provide Covid-19 vaccine documentation* The mission of the Reading Buddies Program is to increase youth literacy by creating mentoring relationships between college students and the youth in the Wilkes-Barre Area School District and Head Start. The Reading Buddies AmeriCorps VISTA at Wilkes University builds capacity by recruiting college students as tutors to help children improve literacy skills, develop friendships, and promote self-efficacy through enriching literacy activities. Reading Buddies will foster a love for literacy among the youth by presenting reading and writing in an enjoyable, rewarding, and engaging manner. The literacy deficit in the Wilkes Barre area is staggering, and the local youth need extra remediation and educational enrichment. The vision of the Reading Buddies Program is to bridge the literacy gap through enriching learning activities. The Reading Buddies Program primarily focuses on reading and comprehension skill building by pairing volunteer Wilkes University college students with small groups of elementary and pre-school-aged children. The goal is to work with children before third grade because in particular, third grade is a critical period where children transition from learning to read to reading to learn. The VISTA will recruit volunteer tutors from undergraduate classes at Wilkes University and are not limited to education majors. First-year through senior students are eligible to become tutors, and any major is welcome. The VISTA will recruit volunteer tutors from undergraduate classes at Wilkes University and are not limited to education majors. The VISTA will collaborate with student tutors and the education department on campus to develop training in Classroom Management, Literacy Education, Relationship-Driven Tutoring, and Diversity and Inclusion.
