Project Planner [MCN VISTA]

SEWA programs are focused on educating South Asians about wellness - wellness of the body and mind, and wellness within family and community. Programs create access to professionals and volunteers who are culturally competent, in most instances to professionals who speak the language of the client; and, for the clients create access to wellness, health care and domestic violence prevention, education and intervention in a culturally relevant manner. SEWA depends on volunteers to operate its programs. Health clinics have over 70 volunteers engaged in serving low-income South Asians annually. Domestic violence prevention programs have over 20 volunteers, youth and senior programs have another 10-15 volunteers. The diversity within the South Asian community presents many challenges including finding service providers who speak a specific language and/or understand cultural proscriptions related to issues like food consumption or gender relationships. SEWA-AIFW’s understanding of the many challenges facing South Asian community members and its efforts to educate providers and create a referral network of health and other providers who are informed about South Asian cultures, language and religious beliefs makes it unique in its ability to improve health within the community. SEWA in its Healthy Families and Health Initiative serve over 1,200 individuals each year, relying on volunteers (physical and mental health professionals, allied health students, community members, legal and social service professionals) to assist community members. The VISTA project will advance SEWA’s anti-poverty efforts by improving SEWA volunteer management capabilities through the creation of a comprehensive volunteer management and reporting system.
