CCNYPA Cornell Cooperative Extension VISTA

The VISTA will be responsible for developing and growing the OCPM Ambassador Corps, a marketing/community outreach plan, and community partnerships needed to support on-site market activities that attract and educate SNAP recipients about the benefits of attending the Market. Volunteers will be used to direct visitors, implement special activities, track and monitor programming, and assist shoppers in utilizing SNAP benefits at the Market. Increased outreach conducted in coordination with project partners will inform recipients of Market-based opportunities, such as: -the availability and health benefits of consuming fresh, local foods; -family (including youth) recreational and educational activities being held at the market (i.e. Find the “Busy Bee” to earn “POP (Power of Produce)” spending tokens – a national, research-based nutrition program for kids); -Food sampling and demonstrations, such as CCEOC’s famous ‘Smoothie Bike” which lets kids try new foods and pedal to activate a bike-propelled blender; -additional financial incentives ($15 in shopping tokens) awarded to those who participate in weekly Food and Nutrition Market Tours conducted by Cornell Cooperative Extension staff (a community health program partially- funded by an American Heart Association Community Impact grant; with 2021-2022 funding renewal TBD next application cycle); The VISTA will also coordinate translation of outreach and marketing materials into other languages commonly spoken in the Utica area. This will serve to reduce language and cultural barriers, including fostering a sense among international residents that they are accepted and welcomed by their host community.
