UNH STEM Discovery Lab Engagement Coordinator VISTA

The UNH STEM Discovery Lab’s mission is to engage with local communities to provide STEM education access and opportunities to volunteers, educators, and youth. Much of our work is in partnership with community organizations and the Manchester School district, both of whom serve a population of youth that are underserved in the STEM fields (female, impoverished, black, Latino/a, New Americans and English Learners) essentially unable to access high quality STEM education and/or enrichment outside of school due to a variety of factors including parent income, single-parent homes, transportation or other inhibitory access issues. Through our programming and rich partnerships, we provide equal access to high quality, research-based STEM enrichment to educators and youth who otherwise would not be able to access it. Increasing adult and youth’s Science Literacy and their enjoyment in the STEM fields through inquiry-based, hands-on, minds-on programming, we are giving underserved youth a chance at a potential pathway in the STEM Fields. Whether this pathway leads to educators providing more enriching STEM lessons in the classroom, volunteers acquiring necessary training to run STEM after-school program or youth attending a STEM program at UNH. Exposure to a STEM pathway is important for example, the 2010-2011 New England Comprehensive Assessment Program Statewide Science Summary for New Hampshire found that about half of grade 4 students and about two-thirds of grade 8 and grade 12 students are partially to substantially below proficient in science. These factors are what drive the programming team that works to create STEM opportunities through the STEM Discovery Lab. The earlier we can engage with youth in the STEM fields, the more likely they will to finish high school and go on to college, breaking the cycle of poverty that many youth face
