LPYS Program Associate VISTA

LPYS was founded in 1994 to provide services to at-risk youth and their families in La Plata County. The agency provides resources to schools, law enforcement, human services, and other community agencies that come in contact with youth who are in need of additional support. The mission of LPYS is to support and advocate for youth facing challenges in school, home, or court. Our ultimate vision is that youth in La Plata County are empowered and have the support and resources they need to strengthen their well-being and engage positively in their community. All of our programs and services are geared toward improving supports and resources for youth, increasing assets and protective factors for youth, and reducing the number of youth who enter the juvenile justice system. We manage all juvenile diversion cases for the courts including truancy cases for participating schools in La Plata County, coordinate court- and school-based restorative practices and programs, and in partnership with the LPC CMP, provide a series of client-centered, community-based programs. During summer months, LPYS offers a positive youth engagement program for middle school students. Durango, the largest town in southwest Colorado, is nestled among the San Juan Mountains with the Animas River running through town. The area has a small ski resort, rafting, mountain and road biking, hiking, and camping. The sun shines close to 300 days out of the year. La Plata Youth Services is seeking a VISTA member who enjoys working with youth and developing youth programs. La Plata Youth Services promotes a positive client-focused environment, with a strong team of supportive and caring staff. LPYS' core values are: Social Justice, Integrity, Compassion, Creativity, and Collaboration. The average per capita income in the past 12 months (2019) amounts to $39,493 with just over 11% of the population living in poverty. This organization seeks to serve those individuals.
