AZ Refugee Resettlement - Employment Accelerator

The Arizona Refugee Resettlement Program (RRP) VISTA Project’s mission is to support refugees’ effective resettlement in Arizona. Refugees face a wide variety of difficult challenges in achieving self-sufficiency. These challenges include such issues as becoming familiar with their new country, securing an affordable place to live, learning about resources available to assist them in resettlement, finding and retaining employment, acquiring a new language and learning how to access/use public services, such as transportation and technology. The Technology and Transportation Employment Accelerator VISTA will be housed at the Welcome to America Project in Phoenix. The purpose of the assignment is to increase the volume of refugees utilizing bikes and computers as employment tools. The VISTA will create a systematic, sustainable approach to collection, preparation and distribution of bicycles and computers for long-standing and effective use for refugees. Success will also require expansion of donor, volunteer and recipient base for bikes and computers for refugees. Evidence is clear that if one has increased technological resources and transportation options the pool of potential employers is expanded. As the second year of the VISTA project, WTAP would like to continue expanding networks, continue to build a sustainable program to reach a large percentage of refugees, which will enhance refugee job attainment.

Member Duties : The Technology and Transportation Employment Accelerator VISTA will systematize and expand the Welcome To America Project (WTAP) approach to collection, preparation and distribution of computers and bicycles for long-standing and effective use for refugees. The overall goal is to expand refugee employment possibilities by eliminating two critical barriers - limited access to transportation and technology - that reduce the quantity and quality of viable employment pursuits. In addition to establishment of efficiency and metrics-driven protocols, success will require expansion of donor and skilled volunteer networks. Success will also require expansion of referral network (conduits to refugee recipients) to increase the volume of refugees utilizing bikes and computers as employment tools. Achievement will be enhanced by providing refugees with more tools and resources to use and maintain bikes and computers effectively over a long period of time to their fullest potential.
