OCDCA: West Park Kamm Neighborhood 2022 Summer Associate

The VISTA will assist WPKND staff in planning, implementing, and reviewing a community engagement and outreach strategy for the Kamm’s Corners Farmers Market, as well as day-of market responsibilities. The goals of the outreach and engagement strategy are to identify and connect with neighborhood leaders, institutions, and organizations that serve low-to-moderate income families, and to better identify the needs of said community. Expected outcomes include increasing the number of people using nutrition incentive programs at the market and increasing overall neighborhood access to fresh, affordable produce and other foods. Our full-year VISTA will help develop materials that WPKND staff and the Summer VISTA will implement at community events. The VISTA will also assist in coordinating sustainability programming at the market, which will provide information and resources to neighborhood residents and homeowners involving energy conservation, responsible landscaping, and other green best practices. Expected outcomes include increased use of rain barrels and responsible landscaping in the neighborhood, as well as resources and programs for energy conservation. The VISTA will also coordinate KCFM Chef Demonstrations, which will offer marketgoers and vendors the opportunity to share nutritious, affordable, and culturally relevant recipes with each other using ingredients found at the market. The VISTA will attend neighborhood events with partner organizations to spread the word about market programming, engage with potential service recipients, and engage with potential volunteers in order to bolster engagement efforts.

Member Duties : WPKND seeks a Summer Associate to work with the Engagement Coordinator to develop and execute a farmers market outreach plan. The Associate will also collaborate with WPKND’s Neighborhood Engagement team to connect marketgoers with resources to improve water & energy efficiency in our aging housing stock. The Associate will attend neighborhood events, community meetings, and meet with local leaders to build trust and better understand needs. The Associate will recruit vendors to lead Chef Demonstrations at the market, where marketgoers can learn nutritious, culturally relevant, and affordable recipes using goods found at the market. At the market, the Summer Associate will engage attendees and promote the acceptance of SNAP and other programs. The Associate and Market Manager will design and launch a survey of market attendees to gain feedback and plan for sustainability initiatives. The Associate will assist in coordinating with partners. Spanish, Arabic, or Farsi a plus.
