ACEnet Summer VISTA

ACEnet’s Farmers Market Facilitation Summer Associate will increase healthy food access in Southeast Ohio by strengthening ACEnet’s capacity to assist farmers in scaling up their farming enterprise, engaging with community development organizations, farmer’s markets, and healthy food access programs in Athens, Meigs & Perry Counties, and expanding the redemption of SNAP and Produce Perks at farmer’s markets. The Summer Associate will develop an understanding of poverty issues surrounding healthy and local food access in Appalachia Ohio. In order to address these issues, the program will work with community partners and organizations to plan and implement events surrounding local food at the Athens Farmers Market, Meigs County Farmers Market and Shawnee Farmers Market for the 2022 season that will include access to resources like cooking demonstrations and tips and tools for growing your own food at home. The Summer Associate will provide access to resources at these events to the farmers, including the ACEnet Agritourism toolkit, and information on ACEnet processing facilities for creating value-added products, technical assistance services like product development and marketing programs, and access to capital assistance ACEnet can offer. Expansion and promotion of farming enterprises will allow for further economic opportunities and healthy food access in an economically distressed area. The program will also lead a Summer Associate to develop an understanding of food systems work in Appalachia and how organizations partner to increase value along the chain of food production, from farmers to consumers and everything in -between.

Member Duties : The VISTA will focus on expanding the redemption of SNAP and Produce Perks at farmer’s markets, and strengthening ACEnet’s capacity to assist farmers in scaling up their farming enterprises. The Associate will work with community partners and organizations to plan and implement events surrounding local food at the Meigs County Farmers Market and Athens Farmers Market for the 2022 season that will include access to resources like cooking demonstrations and tips and tools for growing your own food at home. Summer Associate duties include assisting program staff to identify and recruit regional farmers for our training and technical services through the development of promotional content and outreach strategies; assisting with strengthening partnerships to host special events promoting healthy food access at the Athens Farmers Market and Meigs County Farmers Market; and assisting with outreach at farmers market and other events targeting farmers during the summer months.
