CCNYPA Juniata College's Community Mental Health VISTA
A community approach to addressing mental health needs is expected to increase community members access to and maintenance of mental health services. This project will work to build a collaborative framework for data and resource sharing across multiple community sectors. This VISTA will also address the gaps in and barriers to mental health services by building the capacity of data-informed programs that improve access to care. Improving access to services while addressing other social determinants of health will help to improve overall well-being within the community, which will help to mitigate the effects of poverty. Currently, there is a notable momentum at Juniata College to enhance the educational and training opportunities related to rural health and well-being, especially serving those in poverty. Consequently, there is strong support for this VISTA position. It is expected that the work of this position will help us to better understand and organize mental health services in the county, especially for those living in poverty. It is anticipated that enhancing mental health services will help to improve the overall quality of health and well-being of our county residents. This, in turn, is expected to help to diminish the long-term effects of chronic poverty. This momentum and support is reflected in the strong collaborations on campus as well as the ongoing, sustained relationships developed with Penn Highlands, Huntingdon.
