Co-op Home Care: Communications Associate
CCCD is launching and supporting Co-op Home Care, a worker-owned cooperative that will provide quality and compassionate home care services for elderly and disabled individuals in Yolo County, CA. Yolo County has a severe shortage of homecare providers who provide non-medical services to rural communities and non-rural areas in the county. This project is premised on the beliefs that people who need home care support deserve quality services from a consistent caregiver, and caregivers deserve work stability, livable wages, and positive working conditions. The worker cooperative model is mutually beneficial for clients and caregivers: caregivers gain workplace advantages that encourage them to stay, and clients receive quality, reliable care from a consistent caregiver. This project is an economic development initiative that develops a worker cooperative that does much more than create jobs: it serves as a vehicle for helping people to help themselves, stimulating empowerment that helps members realize the skills and abilities they have to transform themselves and their families. Worker cooperatives are owned and controlled by the worker members; co-ownership and democratic control of the business offer life-changing opportunities for members. As a worker cooperative, Co-op Home Care serves as an effective and long-term strategy against the poor working conditions, pay and high turnover in the industry because: 1) hourly pay is higher than the industry standard; 2) business profits belong to the caregiver co-op members; 3) policies are democratically made by co-op members; 4) ongoing education and training are woven into the co-op business, 5) cooperative ownership and worker control empower worker-members; 5) the co-op accomplishes 1-4 while providing lasting solutions for community needs.

Member Duties : Communications Associate will conduct outreach, education and marketing that informs the community about the co-op and helps the co-op business thrive. Responsibilities include: • Conducting outreach to community organizations to initiate relationships between the cooperative and potential stakeholders • Developing an outreach toolkit that incorporates social media, website posts and other forms of outreach • Recruiting caregivers to grow job creation • Encouraging worker-members to become community ambassadors by helping them learn skills associated with engendering professionalism • Coordinating group presentations and workshops within the local community to promote the co-op's mission and services • Designing an evaluation system and materials to be used for gathering member and client feedback • Attend local community events and engage in other promotional events with worker-members • Organizing fundraising events and other community engagement opportunities
