Appalachian Ohio is rich with assets--assets like our people, our land, and unwavering sense of self-reliance. Our region is also ripe for industry that builds on these assets while supporting the environment and the communities who call it home. As the Rural Action Community Resource VISTA, you can help us harness these assets and mobilize them for a more sustainable, more successful small business economy. This VISTA will join Rural Action staff and AmeriCorps at the Kuhre Center for Rural Renewal, 9030 Hocking Hills Drive, The Plains, Ohio, serving alongside the Sustainable Energy Solutions Program Director, and other Rural Action programs including Sustainable Energy Solutions, Zero Waste, Social Enterprise, and Entrepreneurial Communities. Rural Action VISTA benefits include: --An annual living allowance of $15,002 --A Segal Education Award of $6,345 --An optional cash award of $1,800 in lieu of the Segal Education Award --1 full year of non-competitive status for Federal jobs after term completion --Healthcare --Mileage reimbursement for service-related travel --A training and equipment budget --Experience and training in nonprofit management, sustainable sectors, environmental restoration, community development, community organizing, and Appalachian culture --Networking and teambuilding with regional leaders and passionate National Service members --Grant writing experience Rural Action VISTA members serve in rural communities, so access to reliable transportation is a must. Member Duties : This VISTA will assist with business and social enterprise creation, expansion, and branding, with a specific focus on the agriculture and natural resources sectors. Tasks include designing and coordinating educational tracks to support local entrepreneurs in marketing, recruitment, management, and grant and business plan writing. The VISTA will provide technical assistance to 40 new and existing food businesses in Athens, Perry, Meigs, Morgan and Hocking Counties by supporting entrepreneurs with connections to financial capital, including traditional lenders and private investors. This VISTA will have the opportunity to explore a new Farm incubator on newly-farmable land provided by the Chesterhill produce auction, including researching, budgeting, creating an operating structure, and policy development.
