Opportunity Living VISTA Community Liaison Position
 
 
 
Those with disability are more likely to live in poverty. Individuals living with disabilities can lead to job loss and reduced earnings, barriers to education and skills development, significant additional expenses, and many other challenges that can lead to economic hardship. People with disabilities are twice as likely to live in poverty and just 31% of the working age people with disabilities participate in the workforce. Opportunity Living is a licensed Intermediate Care Facility (ICF) with homes in both Lake City and Rockwell City, IA in Calhoun County. An area that has a population of 9746 according to the US Census Bureau (July 1, 2018) and a median income of $46,302 and a poverty rate of 12.4%. The clients served by Opportunity Living have a disability or functional impairment such as cognitive, developmental, intellectual, mental, physical, sensory, or some combination of these which require varying levels of care and support. Opportunity Living manages an Activity Center where healthy living and safety are the cornerstone of care and support to ensure clients stay well, active, and a part of the community. These clients are low-income and underserved. A VISTA project will create programs to support Opportunity Living by conducting research, developing policies and procedures, implementing educational programming, conducting community needs and assets mapping, and focus on building a strong, vibrant volunteer program to support individuals with disabilities live healthy, safe, productive, independent lives in the community.

Member Duties : The goals of the AmeriCorps VISTA Community Liaison position will be to develop and implement a volunteer program to support Opportunity Living, conduct needs and asset mapping with businesses and community organizations, refine and establish activities to improve economic independence. The VISTA member will serve all clients at Opportunity Living through the Activities Center and with the Home and Community Based Services Program, identify and generate resource development, including fundraising, for equipment and services provided to clients.
