Chicago HOPES for Kids- Summer 2021 Americorps Member
Chicago HOPES for Kids provides shelter-based academic support for children in Chicago's homeless and domestic violence shelters. Summer Enrichment programming is for both Kindergarten - 5th grade students 2 hours a day Monday - Thursday, and a Middle School program for 6th-8th graders, starting in the mid-afternoon. Both programs are volunteer based and consist of three major components; Individual reading support, “Summer Fun” (team building), and enrichment activities. Every volunteer works one-on-one or in a small group with children, allowing for a focus not just on individual academic needs but also Social Emotional Learning skills. Our Summer Program begins in June and runs through the first week of August, members may extend into the school year our Fall After School Program begins in October and runs through mid-December. All programs are held in homeless and domestic violence shelters and our central office is housed in the Chicago Literacy Alliance’s Literacenter, and at each shelter, Site Coordinators manage the program and work with volunteers to help them provide quality academic support to the children. Chicago HOPES Summer Enrichment programs are held at 10 shelter sites throughout Chicago.
