Milestones Early Childhood Development VISTA

Milestones is an early childhood program designed to serve children, age 6 weeks through 5 years, who are experiencing a delay in development, due to various reasons. Children are referred by a physician and evaluated by certified teachers and occupational, physical, and speech therapists to determine if there is a significant delay and need for intervention. A plan is formed with the families, preparing a document with goals and objectives. Using the basis of brain research, indicating brain development being most rapid in the first 3 years of life, the ultimate goal is that delays will be alleviated or reduced so that the child may enter public school kindergarten with as many skills as possible. The plan is carried out in a quality early childhood program with certified teachers, therapists, and children who are typically developing who act as role models and play partners. Milestones receives most of its funding from state and federal programs, mainly Medicaid. Funding rates have not kept up with the cost of living or minimum wage amounts. Other funding comes from United Way and small community grants. There is a huge need to grow our small endowment, search for legacy giving, making a donor base so that Milestones can thrive. Milestones also has an opportunity to create a consistent direction and management system for volunteer involvement, which has great potential at the organization. instead of just hanging on from year to year. The Milestones Early Childhood Development VISTA will play the very important role of building capacity for increased publicity, donor development, and consistent volunteer recruit and development for this crucial service in the community.
