Kodiak VISTA Environmental & Economic Development Specialist
 
 
 
The VISTA member will work with the Kodiak Area Native Association to help educate Kodiak residents about marine ecosystem changes and empower Kodiak communities to build community resilience. The VISTA role will also support efforts to identify, document and manage environmental issues and vulnerabilities in the area in order to maintain a vibrant regional economic base. The responsibilities involved in this position will expose the VISTA to meaningful work in the field of environmental management and offer the member valuable experience in a range of issue areas, from marine ecology to subsistence practices and recycling. The position is based out of Kodiak, Alaska but will involve work throughout the Kodiak region. As a VISTA member through the American Indian Higher Education Consortium, the VISTA will be part of a cohort of members in Tribal organizations across the country working on similar projects.

Member Duties : The VISTA will support KANA's collaboration with Tribal partners and Kodiak community members to promote informed, economic and sustainable use of shellfish and marine subsistence resources. This will involve developing outreach strategies, designing research questions, and developing education materials. The member will also support efforts to reduce waste and increase recycling in the Kodiak region, identifying and capitalizing on opportunities for advocacy and action. To this end, the VISTA will create educational materials, support regional outreach, and conduct research. Finally, the VISTA will support KANA Economic Development projects, assisting with stakeholder collaboration and resource-development. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, possess strong communication skills, and have a passion for environmental sustainability. The applicant should also have experience with project planning and outreach, and should demonstrate strong cultural competency.
